What is Rattan?
Rattan is a large vine found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It consists mainly of a hard outer shell that is split by harvesters to expose the core rattan that is used in the production of cane furniture (and other rattan products).
Because Rattan is such a versitile product, combining versatility with a suprising strength, it is a hugely valuable crop, often sustaining large communities of farmers in some of the area's poorest regions. Harvesting Rattan is a labour intensive process, providing a range of opportunities for employment, but using more basic tools that are more easily available to those wothout the means to pay for or power complicated machinary.
Another beauty of Rattan is that it grows in area's that can not support most other crops. It grows and matures quickly so that supplies can be maintained without a detrimental effect upon the environment. In fact, the very nature of the way that rattan grows - it wraps itself around the trunk and branches of the existing forrest - it actually provides an incentive to avoid the exessive harvesting of the other trees!
Rattan Harvesting
Once the core rattan has been stripped from its shell, it is sulpher cured to change the colour from a light green to the yellow that we recognise in natural rattan products. It is then washed and dried before being ready for the manufacturing process.
